The Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike is a National Scenic Byway that starts in Staunton, VA and bisects West Virginia on its way to Parkersburg, on the bank of the Ohio River. The turnpike played a critical role in the history of this area from bringing transportation into the mountains to being prized by both Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War as essential for control of western Virginia.
