Down Railroad Avenue is the Darden Mill, built in 1902 for the Elkins Milling Company. Recently it has been renovated and now houses both the West Virginia Railroad Museum and the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center. The Darden Mill will open for the season on March 20th and it will be open on Friday and Saturdays from 9:30am – 5:30pm until April 17th when they will be open Thursday – Sunday to visitors. Visit the railroad museum and learn about the important role railroads played in West Virginia history. In 2014 the museum was home to the exciting exhibit “Innovation and Impact: Railroads in the Mountain State.” At the Discovery Center learn about the history, culture, forestry, and nature of Appalachia and how important it is to preserve these aspects of the region.
